Initial Round

Auditions begin with an initial round. Any students at PHU are encouraged to audition, regardless of whether they are in a theatre class. In this first round, students bring their own materials based on parameters set by Mrs. Timberlake and Mr. Hudson. The following table shows typical audition materials which could be required for different types of productions. Note that the list does not include all types of performances and could vary from play to play.

Type of Production Audition Materials What It Means
Dramatic Contemporary Play Minute long dramatic contemporary monologue A monologue no longer than one minute (ideally 50-60 seconds) from a play written after 1900 which is serious in nature
Shakespeare Play Two minute long classical comedic monologue A monologue no longer than two minutes from a play written before 1900 which is light-hearted
Dramatic Musical Minute long monologue and a 32 bar cut from a ballad A monologue no longer than one minute and roughly a 1-1.5 minute part of a song with a slow tempo.
Disney Musical Minute long monologue, an uptempo 32 bar cut, and a dance call A monologue no longer than one minute and a roughly 1-1.5 minute part of a song with a quick tempo. Be prepared to learn some choreography and dance at the audition.

If you have any questions about whether the songs or monologues you select for an audition are good choices and properly fit the criteria, ask Mrs. Timberlake or Mr. Hudson before the audition. Furthermore, if you need help choosing materials, check out the audition materials page!

Callbacks

After the initial round, a callbacks list is published. On this list, most characters and ensemble roles are listed with the actors who are in consideration for, or “called back” that role in addition to providing information about the date and time of the callbacks. Provided with each role are materials that should be learned by those who receive the callback. Then at the callback date, those who are called back perform the materials they were assigned.

After the callbacks are completed, the waiting for the cast list begins. This stage sometimes takes awhile, so stay patient!
